  • “J”

    9 August 2025

This font, used on all RNZAF aircraft, was designed by my father. It’s called Univers J.

A close-up view of a section of an aircraft's exterior. The surface is smooth and painted grey with a glossy finish, reflecting some light and faint shapes. There are four small, rounded rectangular windows aligned horizontally near the top of the image, but they are, but blanked-out. Below the windows, large black alphanumeric characters read "NZ7572." Near the bottom of the image, two thin, parallel dark blue stripes run horizontally across the aircraft's body. The rivets and panel lines of the airplane's metal skin are visible, giving texture to the surface. The overall impression is of a clean, well-maintained aircraft.

  • Tamara?

    1 August 2025

If you “don’t watch regular TV” or “don’t watch ads” then you will completely miss the point of the title.

Even if you do both, you might not put two and two together. Boost if you know.

A red brick railway station building with large arched windows and a clock. The building has a classic architectural style, with decorative stonework along the top and the words "RAILWAY STATION" engraved above the windows. The clock is centred above the middle window, showing the time as approximately 6:05. There is a covered entrance area supported by white columns, and a green streetlamp is visible in front. The lower part of the image shows a stone wall with railings and barred windows. The sky is mostly clear with some clouds on the right side, and sunlight is casting warm tones on the building.

KPL WELL-All stop 16min
KPL WELL-All stop 16min
KPL WELL-All stop SCHED

The top left corner of the board has the "metlink" logo. Apart from a little of the station roof structure, including a light, little else is visible. Catenary wires are just visible against the night sky.

  • Imposing

    30 July 2025

My Dad used to fly these (at least a very similar mark).

  • Precision

    27 July 2025

In my estimation, they were not the best team on the day, but they were, of course, very good. #RIAT99

Nine red aerobatic jets are flying in a tight diamond formation against a pale blue sky. The rear five jets are leaving white smoke trails behind them, and each aircraft has a large white triangle painted underneath. The planes are evenly spaced and aligned, creating a symmetrical and visually striking display. The image has a sense of precision and teamwork, typical of an airshow performance.

  • Flight

    24 July 2025

Like a flight of wartime raiders, these three Tōrea kept low over the water.

Three black and white Oystercatcher birds with long, bright orange beaks are flying low over water. Their wings are outstretched and they are almost parallel to the water’s surface. The water is very calm, creating clear reflections below each bird. The water has soft, blurred reflections of the sky and distant hills. The scene feels peaceful and serene.

  • Solace

    23 July 2025

Varying my walk to work, I decided to wander around Te Papa this morning. The city was gleaming.

A bronze statue is in the left of the frame, standing by a waterfront at night. The statue is of a bald, muscular man, shown from the side and back, gazing out across the water. In the background, a city skyline is brightly illuminated with many buildings, tall and short, as well as lighting on the waterfront itself. The lights are reflected in the calm water below. The sky is dark, and the colourful reflections from the city lights create a vibrant pattern on the water’s surface. The overall mood is calm and contemplative.

  • Beauty

    22 July 2025

They say it’s skin deep — can you tell how beautiful this car is, purely from the skin?

A chrome car badge on a red car body. The badge has three lines of text in shiny, raised letters. The top line says "E TYPE", the middle line says "JAGUAR", and the bottom line says "4.2". The text is centred and stands out against the bright red paint. Each line of text has an underline and the bottom one is slightly bent and the numbers are also slightly at an angle.

  • Altitude

    21 July 2025

I was standing close to sea level. Those peaks are around 1500m high. The Kaikōura coast is breathtaking.

A small town street with parked cars along both sides, leading towards a bridge in the background which crosses over the road. On the right side, there are shops with signs, including one for a tavern advertising live music and a beer garden, and another called "global culture." The buildings have a modern, simple design with a blue roof and white walls. The street is quiet, with no visible pedestrians. In the distance, there are tall, snow-capped mountains under a cloudy sky, creating a dramatic backdrop. The overall atmosphere is calm and scenic, with a mix of urban and natural elements.

  • Orange You Glad?

    18 July 2025

Wait… you don’t know the joke?

A waterfront scene just before sunrise. The sky is filled with dramatic orange hues, with grey clouds. The water in the foreground reflects these warm colours. The ripples spread out the colours so there is more orange. On the right, there is a wooden building with a balcony and a high lit window, sitting at the edge of the water with steps leading down. In the centre background, there is a small rocky promontory with some trees and bushes. Behind this is a tall structure with two angled poles and cables which are part of an unseen bridge. • Old Soul

    15 July 2025

If you’re from around these parts, you probably know this tree.

A large leafless Poplar tree, as tall as it is wide, stands beside a calm body of water under a clear blue sky. The tree is situated on a grassy area next to a paved road. On the left side of the image, there is a parked blue car and a yellow road sign with a red "no entry" sign below it. In the background, there are rolling hills and some scattered houses. The overall scene is bright and sunny, with long shadows typical of late afternoon.

  • Runabout

    14 July 2025

When I saw this little aeroplane, I didn’t recognise the type but assumed it was something fairly modern. Nope! This Cessna 177B Cardinal is almost as old as me!

A small single-engined aircraft is sitting on an airport apron seen from ahead and to the left. It is a high-winged design with a tricycle landing gear featuring spatted wheels. The aircraft is predominantly white with dark blue on the spinner and top of the nose. The same blue features in a broad stripe on the side of the fuselage which comes to a point under the side window and is surrounded by a lighter blue stripe that reaches the noise in a point. The nearest main wheel has red chocks placed on either side of the wheels. In the background, there are industrial buildings, two large cylindrical storage tanks, a white airport bus labeled “Tranzit," and a rocky, grassy hillside. Also visible are multiple standard airport signs marking runways and taxiways. The weather is clear and sunny.

  • It’s Real

    12 July 2025

Not an outlandish movie prop nor kid’s toy at all.

It’s an Aussie design based on a Kiwi design based on an Aussie design that was basically a welded steel tank fitted for flight.

Aircraft exhibit in a museum hangar. The main focus is a small, unusual-looking airplane with a blue nose, white body, and orange stripes. Its cockpit is set far forward, and the wings are mounted low on the fuselage. In front of the plane, there is an aircraft instrument panel displayed on a table, along with several information stands.

To the right, there is a model or small yellow biplane with the markings "SLZZN" and "NZ775" on its wings. In the background, several other vintage aircraft are visible, including a yellow seaplane and another plane with a red tail. The hangar is well-lit, with corrugated metal walls and aviation posters on the back wall. The floor is concrete, and the area is roped off to keep visitors at a distance from the displays.

  • Wire

    10 July 2025

It’s a little-known fact that Kōtare spend 80% of their lives sitting on man-made wires.

A small bird perched on a thick, twisted wire against a clear blue sky. The bird has a teal-green back and wings, a white underside, and a long, pointed beak. It is facing to the left, and the wire runs diagonally across the image from the bottom left to the top right. The overall scene is calm and simple, with the bird as the main focus.

    OK, maybe it’s a little-proven fact, too.
