Koru

The picture is of a still-forming fern frond of a large tree fern. A thick green stalk is wound around in a spiral at the end, within which are dark brown hairs. Additional spirals emanate from the main spiral. Towards the base of the stalk, there are some more, smaller spirals. The background is the lush green of a fully developed canopy of fern fronds. These spirals are called Koru in the Māori language.
